Powering Hundreds of Businesses Including:

There is a specific point in the home barista journey where your grinder becomes the bottleneck, leaving your espresso shots stuck between too fast and completely choked. The Encore ESP addresses this by introducing a refined espresso stepped adjustment that provides the resolution needed to finally find the sweet spot in your extraction. It is an honest tool for anyone who has moved past the 'good enough' phase and wants their equipment to stay out of the way of the morning ritual.

Product Features

Refined Espresso Stepped Adjustment

The ESP’s stepped adjustment tightens burr movement across settings 1–20 to make fine grind changes more repeatable for espresso. For home baristas this means smaller, predictable adjustments while you tweak dose and yield—less guesswork during morning ritual dialing.

M2 40mm Conical Burrs

The Encore ESP uses the same M2 40mm conical steel burrs found in the Virtuoso+, giving a tighter grind-size distribution than the original Encore. That improved consistency matters when you’re dialing espresso at home or switching between pour-over and drip—cleaner particle distribution helps extraction and makes dialing-in faster.

Portafilter Dosing Kit

Baratza includes a portafilter dosing cup with adapters for both 54mm and 58mm baskets plus a fitted base that locks into the grinder. That built-in workflow accessory makes single-dosing and tidy portafilter fills straightforward without rigging up third-party gear.

Gear-Reduction Speed Control

A gear reduction motor keeps the burrs turning at a steady 550 RPM to reduce heat, static and noise while grinding. Slower, controlled speed helps preserve bean aroma and yields less fluffy grounds—useful when you’re pulling consecutive shots at home.

Low Retention Single-Dose Friendly

Thanks to its conical burr geometry and doserless design, the Encore ESP has very low grind retention, making it suitable for single-dosing different beans day-to-day. Less leftover coffee between batches means cleaner flavor when you switch roasts for your next cup.

Easy Burr Access & Maintenance

The bean hopper and top burr are easily removable for cleaning access, and the grinder ships with burr shims and a brush for upkeep. Simple disassembly keeps routine maintenance fast so your grinder stays consistent without complicated service.

The Coffeeionado Take

Who's It For:

  • Entry-Level Espresso Experimenters — The Encore ESP is Baratza's espresso-focused entry point — 40mm conical burrs with finer adjustment range than the standard Encore, designed for people who want to try espresso without buying a prosumer grinder
  • Breville Bambino and Gaggia Classic Owners — If your espresso machine is entry-level, the Encore ESP is the matched grinder — affordable, capable, and not overkill for your setup
  • Baratza Fans Who Want Espresso on a Budget — Same Encore platform, tuned for espresso. If you already trust Baratza's reliability, this is their espresso entry ticket

It's Right For You If:

  • You want to try espresso without investing in a prosumer grinder — the Encore ESP's finer adjustment range makes espresso dial-in possible at an entry-level price.
  • Your daily routine is 2–4 espresso drinks and you want a grinder that will not require a second mortgage to get started.

Things to Consider:

  • At 0.8-1.2 g/sec, this is one of the slower espresso grinders. An 18g dose takes 15–22 seconds — not a dealbreaker, but noticeable if you are used to faster machines.
  • The 40mm conical burrs have a ceiling — once you are serious about light roasts or single-origin dialing, you will want to step up to 55mm+ flat burrs.
  • Stepped adjustment limits fine-tuning. For some beans, the gap between settings means you are choosing between 'close' and 'closer,' not 'exact.'

Our Take:

The Baratza Encore ESP is the honest espresso starter — it will not match a Eureka or Mazzer, and it is not supposed to. It is the grinder you buy to find out if home espresso is your thing, backed by Baratza's parts support when you inevitably upgrade.

Product FAQ

Is the Baratza Encore ESP suitable for both espresso and filter coffee brewing methods?

Yes. The Encore ESP is designed with a grind range that covers true espresso all the way through coarser settings for manual brewing methods like pour-over, AeroPress, and French press. The lower-numbered settings are optimized for espresso, while the higher settings work well for filter and immersion methods.

Is the Encore ESP a stepless grinder, and how precise are the adjustments for espresso?

The Encore ESP uses stepped adjustment, not stepless. However, it has a refined micro-adjustment range in the lower numbers specifically for espresso, giving you small, repeatable steps that allow you to dial in most home espresso machines with good precision.

How often do I need to replace the burrs, and how long do they typically last?

Burr life depends on use and the types of beans you grind. For typical home use (1–2 pounds of coffee per week), the burrs generally last several years before a noticeable drop in performance. Many users only consider replacing burrs after grinding a few hundred pounds of coffee, or when shot times become inconsistent even after cleaning and recalibration.

What type of burrs does the Baratza Encore ESP use?

The Encore ESP uses 40 mm conical steel burrs. These are engineered to provide a consistent grind size in the finer range for espresso and maintain uniformity through the coarser settings for filter coffee.

Does the Encore ESP have timed or manual dosing, and is it hands-free to use with a portafilter?

The Encore ESP is a primarily manual-dosing grinder: you control the grind duration by using its on/off switch or pulse button. It comes with a portafilter holder that allows for convenient, semi–hands-free grinding directly into a portafilter, but it does not have a built-in timer or programmable dosing.

How fast does the Encore ESP grind, and can it keep up with making multiple drinks in a row?

Grinding speed will vary with grind size, but in the espresso range it typically grinds enough coffee for a double shot in well under a minute. For home use—such as making several drinks back-to-back for family or guests—it can comfortably keep up, though it is not designed for the continuous, high-volume demands of a busy commercial cafe.

Does the Encore ESP have a built-in cooling fan for the motor or burrs?

No. The Encore ESP does not use an active cooling fan. It relies on a robust motor running at relatively low RPM to reduce heat and noise. For home use, including several drinks in a row, this is sufficient; extended, nonstop grinding sessions are not recommended.

Is the Encore ESP a grind-by-weight grinder?

No. The Encore ESP is not a grind-by-weight grinder and does not have a built-in scale. You’ll typically weigh your beans separately on a scale before grinding (single dosing) or estimate by time and experience if you leave beans in the hopper.
