Powering Hundreds of Businesses Including:

You’ve likely spent enough time struggling with inconsistent pre-ground bags or a noisy department store mill to know that your coffee is only as good as the uniformity of your grounds. Transitioning to the Encore is the moment you admit that guesswork has no place in your morning kitchen. Its 40 stepped grind settings provide the repeatable precision necessary to find the sweet spot for a pour-over and, more importantly, stay there. It’s time to stop fighting your equipment and start tasting your beans.

Product Features

40 Stepped Grind Settings

Forty stepped adjustments cover a range from 250 to 1200 microns, letting you move from fine to coarse for espresso, pour-over, or French press. The stepped collar makes it simple to return to a trusted setting during your daily brew ritual.

40mm Conical Burrs

The Encore uses 40mm conical burrs with a precision mounting system to deliver consistent particle size across the grind range. The burrs are removable without tools for easy cleaning—handy when you’re dialing in recipes or switching beans in the morning.

Low-Speed, High-Torque Motor

A high-torque DC motor runs the burrs at about 450 RPM to reduce heat transfer and static so grounds stay cool and less clingy for cleaner extraction. The low RPM also reduces noise—ideal for quieter mornings at home.

Next-Gen Gearbox & Safety

The updated second generation gearbox features a 15% glass-filled thermoplastic drive gear for quieter, more shock-resistant operation and durability. It also includes an automatic thermal cut-off switch that trips if a foreign object enters the burrs, protecting the motor and gears.

Doserless 5 oz Dispense

Grounds are dispensed directly into a 5 oz container with no spillage, making single-dose prep and cleanup fast and tidy on your counter. The doserless design preserves grind consistency and keeps your workspace neat between brews.

Portafilter & Scale Ready

The Encore accepts an optional portaholder for grinding straight into a portafilter and can be fitted with the Baratza Esatto scale to enable dose-by-weight dispensing accurate to ±0.2 g. These accessories let you add practical precision as your brewing demands grow.

The Coffeeionado Take

Who's It For:

  • First-Time Grinder Buyers — The Baratza Encore is the default recommendation for a reason: 40mm conical burrs, straightforward operation, and a company that stocks replacement parts. If this is your first real grinder, start here
  • Drip and Pour-Over Brewers Who Want Consistency — At 0.8 g/sec, the Encore grinds your morning dose in about 22 seconds. Not fast, but consistent — and consistency matters more than speed for filter methods
  • Budget-Conscious Home Brewers — The Encore delivers genuine grind improvement over blade grinders at a price that does not require justification

It's Right For You If:

  • You want a reliable grinder that does one thing well — grind coffee consistently for drip, pour-over, or French press. The Encore does exactly that at 3.1kg.
  • Your daily routine is 1–4 cups and you want a grinder that will not need replacing in two years. Baratza stocks parts, which matters.

Things to Consider:

  • At 0.8 g/sec, the Encore is slow by modern standards. An 18g dose takes roughly 22 seconds — fine for a single cup, but tedious for a group.
  • The 40mm conical burrs are adequate for filter but lack the precision for consistent espresso. If espresso is in your future, budget for a dedicated espresso grinder.
  • At 3.1kg, the lightweight build vibrates more than heavier alternatives. You may want to steady it during grinding.

Our Take:

The Baratza Encore is the grinder you buy when you want to stop buying pre-ground coffee. It is not exciting, not fast, and not fancy — but it is reliable, backed by a company that stocks parts, and it will still be working in five years. That is worth more than features.

Product FAQ

Is the Baratza Encore Grinder suitable for both espresso and filter coffee?

The Baratza Encore is primarily designed for drip, pour-over, French press, and other filter-style brewing. It can grind fine enough for some pressurized or entry-level espresso setups, but it is not optimized for true, consistent, cafe-style espresso shots on standard non-pressurized machines.

Is the Baratza Encore a stepless grinder, and how many grind settings does it have?

The Baratza Encore is a stepped grinder, not stepless. It offers 40 distinct grind settings, adjustable via the numbered collar, ranging from coarse (for French press or cold brew) to fine (for AeroPress and some basic espresso-style applications).

What type of burrs does the Baratza Encore Grinder come with?

The Baratza Encore uses 40 mm conical steel burrs. These burrs are designed to deliver consistent particle size for a wide range of manual and automatic filter brewing methods and are easily replaceable when worn.

How often do I need to replace the burrs, and how long do they typically last?

Burr life depends on how much coffee you grind and how dark or oily your beans are. For typical home use (1–2 pounds per week), the Encore’s burrs often last several years before needing replacement. A common guideline is to consider replacing them around 500–700 pounds of coffee or if you notice a clear drop in grind consistency and cup quality.

What brewing methods is the Baratza Encore best suited for?

The Encore excels at home use for drip coffee makers, pour-over (like V60, Chemex, Kalita), AeroPress, Moka pot, and French press. It can also handle coarser settings for cold brew. While it can go relatively fine, it is not the ideal choice if your main focus is dialing in classic, non-pressurized espresso shots.

Will the Baratza Encore Grinder fit under most kitchen cabinets in the USA?

Yes, the Encore is designed with typical US kitchen cabinets in mind. Its approximate height is about 13–14 inches, which allows it to fit under most standard cabinets, though very low cabinets or shelves should still be measured to be sure.

Is the Baratza Encore hands-free, and how is the grinding started and stopped?

The Encore is not a fully hands-free, portafilter-holding grinder. It has an on/off side switch for continuous grinding and a front pulse button you press and hold to grind. You place a grounds bin under the chute, which fits securely without needing to be held; if using a portafilter, you’ll need to hold it in place yourself.

Does the Baratza Encore have timed or weight-based dosing?

No, the Encore does not include built-in timed or grind-by-weight dosing. It runs either continuously via the on/off switch or as long as you hold the front pulse button. For precise dosing, users typically weigh beans before grinding or weigh the grounds after grinding with a separate scale.
