and hundreds of cafés, restaurants and offices.

There comes a morning when your entry-level gear can no longer keep up with your palate. This is the grinder you buy when you’ve stopped guessing and started measuring, requiring a tool that respects the difference between a coarse press and a fine pour-over. The 40-second digital timer provides the kind of repeatability that removes a frustrating variable from your workflow, letting you focus on the brew rather than the clock. It’s a functional step forward for a kitchen counter that has officially graduated to a serious hobby.

Product Features

40-Second Digital Timer

The new 40 second digital timer is programmable to one-tenth of a second so you can dose with repeatable precision. Set and recall exact grind times to streamline your daily routine and keep shots and brews consistent.

40 mm Conical Burrs

The Virtuoso+ uses 40 mm M2 conical steel burrs for consistent drip, pour-over, immersion, and French press grinding. It is filter-focused rather than a dedicated non-pressurized espresso grinder.

Pulse Mode

The built-in 'pulse' feature lets you add incremental time to a grind while holding the button—perfect for learning the timing that matches your preferred weight or tamp. Once dialed, that exact time can be saved on the digital timer for consistent single-dose use.

40 Stepped Grind Settings

A 40-step stepped adjustment spans 200–1200 microns so you can move from espresso-fine to French-press coarse without guesswork. The stepped collar makes it easy to return to familiar settings when you swap beans or recipes.

Low-Speed 550 RPM Drive

A combination of gear and electronic speed control turns the burrs at a calm 550 RPM to reduce heat, noise, and static while grinding. The lower RPM helps protect delicate flavors and cuts down on messy cling from static.

Clear Bin With LED Lighting

The Virtuoso+ features a clear bean hopper and a transparent grinder bin with a preinstalled LED light so you can see how much ground coffee you’ve collected. That visual feedback makes single-dose workflows and quick adjustments easier at the counter.

Our honest read

The Coffeeionado Take

Straight answers, before you buy.

Who's It For

  • Home filter-coffee brewers upgrading from a blade grinder or entry-level burr grinder.
  • Pour-over and batch-brew users who want repeatable timed dosing.
  • Households that switch among several manual brew methods and want easy-to-revisit settings.

It's Right For You If

  • You want a compact, dependable grinder for drip, pour-over, AeroPress, or French press.
  • You value a digital timer that repeats a grind duration to the tenth of a second.
  • You prefer clearly stepped settings that are easy to record and revisit.

Things to Consider

  • The Virtuoso+ is primarily a filter grinder; its 40 stepped settings offer less fine espresso control than an espresso-focused model.
  • Dosing is based on time rather than an integrated scale, so bean or grind changes may require retiming.
  • Its published 1.3–2.4 g/s output and home-duty design are intended for daily household batches, not continuous service.

Our Take

The Virtuoso+ is a practical step up for filter coffee: its M2 burr, 40-second digital timer, and serviceable Baratza design make daily pour-over and drip dosing repeatable without adding unnecessary complexity.

Virtuoso+ Coffee Grinder by Baratza

The Baratza Virtuoso+ is a compact home grinder built primarily for drip, pour-over, immersion, and French press brewing. Its 40 mm M2 conical steel burrs, 40-step adjustment, and digital timer make repeatable daily filter dosing straightforward.

40-Second Digital Timer

The front control provides up to 40 seconds of grinding, adjustable in 0.1-second increments. A pulse mode lets you add coffee manually when needed. Dosing is time-based, not weight-based.

M2 Conical Burrs

The 40 mm conical steel burrs run at 550 RPM. Baratza publishes a grind rate of approximately 1.3–2.4 g/s depending on the selected grind setting and coffee.

Filter-Focused Grind Range

Forty stepped settings make it easy to return to familiar positions for pour-over, drip, AeroPress, and French press. The Virtuoso+ can grind fine, but customers focused on dialing non-pressurized espresso should choose a grinder with finer espresso adjustment.

Product FAQ

Does the Baratza Encore Virtuoso+ work well for both espresso and filter coffee?

Yes. The Encore Virtuoso+ has 40 grind settings from fine to coarse. It can grind fine enough for many home espresso machines (especially pressurized baskets) and is excellent for filter methods like pour-over, drip, AeroPress, and French press. For very demanding, high-end espresso setups, a dedicated espresso grinder may offer finer adjustment, but for most home users it can handle both espresso and filter coffee.

Is the Encore Virtuoso+ a stepless grinder or does it have click‑style steps?

The Encore Virtuoso+ is a stepped grinder. It uses 40 clearly defined, numbered settings that you select by rotating the hopper. It does not offer stepless micro-adjustment, but the steps are close enough together for typical home use across espresso and brew methods.

What type of burrs does the Baratza Encore Virtuoso+ use?

The Encore Virtuoso+ uses 40 mm conical stainless steel burrs designed and manufactured by MPE (USA). These conical burrs are optimized for consistent particle size and low fines, making them well-suited for both espresso and a wide range of brew methods.

How long do the burrs last, and how often do they need to be replaced?

Burr life depends on use and the kind of coffee you grind, but under typical home use (1–2 pounds of coffee per week), the burrs often last 5–7 years or more before needing replacement. Heavy daily use, very dark roasts, or grinding for multiple people can shorten that timeframe. Signs that burrs need replacement include noticeably slower grinding, more dust/fines, and difficulty achieving consistent grind sizes at your usual settings.

What brewing methods and settings is this grinder best suited for?

The Encore Virtuoso+ is designed primarily for home use and excels at: espresso (typically around the finer settings, e.g., 8–15 depending on machine and beans), AeroPress and moka pot (fine–medium), pour-over and drip (medium range), and French press or cold brew (coarser range). It is ideal for home baristas, small offices, and coffee enthusiasts who use multiple brew methods.

Will the Encore Virtuoso+ fit under most kitchen cabinets?

Yes, in most cases. The grinder is approximately 13.8 inches (35 cm) tall with the standard hopper in place. Most U.S. kitchen cabinets are around 17–18 inches above the counter, so the grinder usually fits comfortably under standard cabinetry. Always compare this height to your specific counter-to-cabinet clearance to be sure.

Does the grinder offer hands‑free operation or do I need to hold the portafilter or container?

The Encore Virtuoso+ is designed primarily for grinding into its included grounds bin. It does not have a built-in portafilter fork or clamp for true hands‑free portafilter grinding. You can rest the grounds bin in place and run the timer hands‑free, but if you grind directly into a portafilter you’ll hold or support it while grinding.

Does the Encore Virtuoso+ have timed or manual dosing controls?

It has both. The Encore Virtuoso+ features a digital front-mounted timer that can be set in 0.1‑second increments up to a set maximum, allowing you to repeat a dose by time. It also has a manual grind mode: you can run the grinder continuously by holding the side switch, releasing it when you have the amount you want.
