and hundreds of cafés, restaurants and offices.

There comes a point where you stop looking for a better roast and start looking for a better way to treat it. Moving to this level of hardware means you're no longer fighting with broad settings to get a usable extraction; you're using the 220-step dual-cam adjustment to find the exact micron that makes a single-origin coffee behave. It is the final piece of hardware needed to stop guessing and start repeating your results.

Product Features

High-Torque DC Motor

A high-torque DC motor turns the burrs slowly to keep grinds cool and operation quiet while maintaining throughput. The Vario+ dispenses at measurable rates—1.6 grams/sec for fine espresso and 2.2 grams/sec for coarser French Press—so you can predict dose speed when dialing in.

Programmable Timed Grinding

Three programmable time presets are adjustable to the tenth of a second for repeatable home dosing. Save separate grind times for espresso, filter, or press recipes, then use manual control when you need to top off a dose.

Mahlkönig 54mm Ceramic Flat Burrs

Mahlkönig 54mm Ceramic Flat Burrs limit heat transfer during grinding to help preserve flavor while maintaining edge retention longer than typical steel burrs. Ceramic construction also contributes to stable particle distribution that better suits both espresso and filter extraction.

220-Step Dual-Cam Adjustment

Dual-cam macro and micro adjustment gives 220 stepped settings for fine, repeatable control—ideal for moving between espresso and filter without guesswork. The Vario+ supports an espresso calibration and a grind range of roughly 250–1150 microns for precise tuning.

Removable Hopper & Burr Access

The removable 300 g / 10.6 oz hopper supports daily home use and lifts off for easier bean changes and cleaning. An included burr-removal tool provides straightforward access to the burr chamber.

Portafilter Holder & Doserless Delivery

An all-metal portafilter holder lets you grind directly into a carrier for timed on-demand espresso dosing, while the doserless design also fills the separate ground coffee container (6.3 oz) for batch brew or filter work. That flexibility keeps grind delivery consistent between workflow styles.

Our honest read

The Coffeeionado Take

Straight answers, before you buy.

Who's It For

  • Home baristas who want repeatable macro/micro adjustment for espresso and filter recipes.
  • Baratza upgraders who want 54 mm flat ceramic burrs and programmable timed dosing.
  • Multi-method households that value a grounds bin and a portafilter holder in one grinder.

It's Right For You If

  • You want the confidence of stepped settings — click into your espresso setting, click into your filter setting, and know it is the same every time.
  • Your daily routine is 2–6 drinks across different brew methods, and you want one grinder that handles all of them at 4.1kg.

Things to Consider

  • Stepped adjustment means you are limited to preset increments. For espresso dial-in, that can mean the difference between 'close' and 'exact' — stepless grinders offer finer control.
  • At 4.0kg, the lighter build is portable but vibrates more than heavier alternatives during grinding.
  • 2.2 g/sec is solid for home use but slower than 64mm grinders. If you are grinding for a group, expect to wait.

Our Take

The open-box Vario+ offers the same 54 mm ceramic-burr platform and 220-position adjustment as the standard model at an open-box value. It is a flexible choice for home users who want both espresso and filter capability with repeatable timed dosing.

Product FAQ

Does the Baratza Vario+ work well for both espresso and filter coffee?

Yes. The Baratza Vario+ is designed as a multi-purpose grinder with a wide grind range suitable for espresso, AeroPress, pour-over, drip, and French press. The macro and micro adjustment levers let you fine-tune grind size for both espresso and filter brewing methods.

Is the Baratza Vario+ a stepless grinder, and how precise are the grind settings?

The Vario+ uses a hybrid stepped/stepless-style adjustment system. It has 10 macro steps, each with 23 micro steps, giving 230 distinct settings. While technically stepped, the small micro increments allow very fine dialing-in similar to a stepless grinder for precise espresso adjustment.

What type of burrs does the Baratza Vario+ Coffee Grinder come with?

The Vario+ comes with 54 mm flat, ceramic burrs designed for excellent espresso performance and consistent grind for brew methods. They are engineered for longevity and minimal heat transfer during grinding.

How long do the burrs on the Baratza Vario+ last, and how often do they need to be replaced?

Burr life depends on use and bean hardness, but Baratza’s 54 mm ceramic burrs typically last several years in a home setting. As a rough guideline, they’re often rated for hundreds of pounds of coffee. You’ll know it’s time to replace them if shots become harder to dial in, grind uniformity drops, or you need to grind much finer than before for the same extraction.

What types of environments is the Baratza Vario+ best suited for (home, café, restaurant)?

The Baratza Vario+ is primarily intended as a premium home and light-duty office grinder. It can handle multiple drinks in a row but is not designed as a heavy-duty, high-volume café or restaurant grinder that runs nonstop throughout the day.

Can the Baratza Vario+ keep up with making multiple drinks in a row, and how fast does it grind?

For home and light office use, the Vario+ is fast enough for back-to-back drinks. Typical grind times are on the order of seconds for a standard espresso dose. It’s well-suited to making several drinks in succession, though it’s not intended for nonstop commercial service.

Is the Baratza Vario+ a grind-by-weight grinder, and how is dosing controlled?

No, the Vario+ is not grind-by-weight. It uses programmable timed dosing with three user-programmable buttons, plus a manual grind mode. You set grind time for your dose and the grinder will run automatically to that time.

Is the Baratza Vario+ hands-free, and does it come with both a portafilter holder and a grounds bin?

Yes. The Vario+ includes a metal portafilter holder for hands-free grinding directly into a portafilter, as well as a grounds bin for grinding for filter and batch-brew methods.
