and hundreds of cafés, restaurants and offices.

The MDXS is a quiet, compact commercial espresso grinder with 65 mm flat steel burrs, two programmable timed doses, and stepless micrometric adjustment. Its manufacturer-rated up-to-1.5-kg daily positioning makes it a strong fit for lower-volume primary service or secondary espresso duty.

Product Features

Two Programmable Doses

Program single and double timed doses for repeatable service, with manual grinding available for dialing in and purging.

65 mm Flat Steel Burrs

The 65 mm flat steel burr set supplies consistent espresso grinding at approximately 2–2.5 g/s.

On-Demand Workflow

Coffee is ground directly into the portafilter for each order; this is not a chamber-style doser or pregrind system.

Stepless Adjustment

Micrometric stepless adjustment lets the barista make small grind changes as coffee and conditions shift.

Up to 1.5 kg per Day

Nuova Simonelli positions the MDXS for up to approximately 1.5 kg of coffee per day, suitable for lower-volume commercial duty.

Quiet, Compact Build

Sound-conscious construction and a smaller footprint make the MDXS practical for restaurants, offices, and tight service counters.

Our honest read

The Coffeeionado Take

Straight answers, before you buy.

Who's It For

  • Low- to medium-volume cafés and coffee carts.
  • Restaurants, offices, bakeries, and hospitality counters.
  • Busy bars needing a decaf or secondary espresso grinder.

It's Right For You If

  • You need a compact commercial grinder for a low- to medium-volume bar or secondary coffee.
  • You want quiet operation, two programmable timed doses, and stepless adjustment without the footprint of a high-volume grinder.

Things to Consider

  • Dosing is time-based rather than grind-by-weight, so dose weight should be checked when beans or grind settings change.
  • The manufacturer’s up-to-1.5-kg daily figure places it below high-volume primary café grinders.
  • The 65 mm burr platform prioritizes compactness and moderate duty over the speed of larger 75–85 mm commercial grinders.

Our Take

The MDXS is a sensible middle ground between a prosumer grinder and a full-size café workhorse. It delivers a genuine on-demand commercial workflow in a manageable footprint, but its daily planning range belongs below high-volume 75–85 mm grinders.

Product FAQ

What type and size of burrs does the Nuova Simonelli MDXS Digit Grinder use, and are they flat or conical?

The Nuova Simonelli MDXS Digit uses large flat burrs (65 mm). Flat burrs are known for producing a very consistent grind and clear flavor profile, which is ideal for espresso service in busy environments.

How often do I need to replace the burrs, and how long do they typically last?

Burr life depends on volume, bean hardness, and maintenance. For typical commercial use, expect around 700–1,000 kg of coffee through the burrs before replacement is recommended. In lower‑volume environments, this often translates to 1–3 years. Regular cleaning and avoiding rocks or very dark, oily beans will help extend burr life.

Is the MDXS Digit a stepless grinder, and how precise is the grind adjustment for espresso?

The MDXS Digit uses a micrometric stepless adjustment system. This allows very fine, incremental changes to grind size, making it suitable for dialing in espresso with high precision rather than jumping between preset steps.

Can this grinder be used for both espresso and brew methods like pour‑over or batch brew?

The MDXS Digit is optimized for espresso grinding and fast, on‑demand workflow. While you can adjust it coarser, it is not designed as a multi‑purpose brew grinder and is best used primarily for espresso or very similar fine settings.

What types of settings is the Nuova Simonelli MDXS Digit best suited for (café, restaurant, home, office)?

The MDXS Digit is a commercial‑grade grinder designed for cafés, coffee bars, and restaurants that need consistent, fast espresso grinding throughout the day. It can also work well in higher‑volume offices or hospitality settings where multiple espresso drinks are made regularly.

Does the MDXS Digit have timed or manual dosing, and can I program multiple doses?

The MDXS Digit is an on‑demand grinder with electronic timed dosing. You can program multiple dose settings (for example, single and double shots) via the digital interface, and you can also trigger grinding manually when needed.

Is the grinder hands‑free, and does it include a portafilter holder or fork?

Yes. The MDXS Digit includes an adjustable portafilter fork so you can lock in the portafilter and grind hands‑free. This allows the barista to prep other tasks while the dose is grinding.

How fast is the Nuova Simonelli MDXS Digit, and can it keep up with rush periods and multiple drinks in a row?

With its 65 mm flat burrs and powerful motor, the MDXS Digit is designed for medium‑to‑high‑volume service. It can grind a standard double‑shot espresso dose in just a few seconds, making it capable of keeping up with busy rushes in most cafés and restaurants when properly dialed in and maintained.

How does free installation work?

We want to make your purchase as smooth as possible and will pay the installation via rebate on commercial espresso machines. This includes commercial machines with more than 1 group head and 220V.

If the certified installer needed is over 1.5 hours away then we will pay for the installation call (and install up to the value suggested on page minus call fee). Travel will be paid by customer. Inquire if you have any questions about your location.

Please note, any discounts subject to void the paid installation offer.

At Coffeeionado, professional installation is included with qualifying espresso machine purchases. Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible — from coordinating the technician to getting your machine up and running on day one.

Which Machines Qualify

Free professional installation is included with all espresso machines of 2 groups or more where indicated on the product listing. This policy applies to espresso machines only and does not cover other coffee equipment such as grinders, brewers, or accessories.

If you are unsure whether your machine qualifies, contact us before purchasing and we'll confirm.

What's Included

  • Travel and labor costs for installation within the technician's service area (up to 2 hours of travel)
  • Setup, basic programming, and commissioning of the equipment
  • Scheduling during regular business hours, Monday through Friday
  • Associated taxes and fees related to the installation itself

Installation must be completed within 90 days of delivery of the equipment. The installation benefit lapses after this window and cannot be reinstated.

How Installation Is Arranged

Depending on your purchase, installation is handled one of two ways:

Arranged directly — In many cases, Coffeeionado or the manufacturer will coordinate and pay the technician on your behalf. We will contact you after your order is processed to schedule the visit.

Reimbursement — In some cases, you may be asked to arrange the installation locally using an authorized technician and submit a rebate form for reimbursement. Once approved, the covered amount will be refunded to the original payment method used for your order.

We will confirm which arrangement applies to your purchase at the time of order confirmation. If you have questions before purchasing, contact us and we'll walk you through it.

What's Not Included

The following are outside the scope of the installation policy and remain the customer's responsibility:

  • Travel or callout costs beyond the first 2 hours of the technician's travel time — if your location falls outside the local service area, the overage is the customer's responsibility
  • Water filtration systems and installation materials — including plumbing fittings, tubing, plugs, outlets, and any other ancillary components required to prepare the site
  • Electrical or plumbing work — site preparation must be completed before the technician arrives
  • Training on equipment operation — installation covers commissioning only, not barista or operational training
  • False start or callout fees if the technician arrives and the site is not ready for installation

Important: If a technician arrives and cannot complete the installation because the site is unprepared, you will be responsible for any callout or false start fee charged by the technician. However, your installation benefit remains intact — the visit will be rescheduled at no additional cost to your policy.

Water Filtration Requirement

Water filtration must be installed and operational before or at the time of installation. This is not optional — operating a commercial espresso machine without proper filtration will void the manufacturer's warranty. If filtration is not in place at the time of the technician's visit, installation may need to be rescheduled and the callout fee will be the customer's responsibility.

If you need guidance on water filtration requirements for your machine, contact us before scheduling your installation.

Service Area

Installation coverage is tied to the manufacturer's authorized technician service area, generally within a 1.5-hour radius of the nearest certified technician. If the customer's location falls outside this area, Coffeeionado will make reasonable efforts to arrange a local authorized technician, but travel costs beyond the 2-hour coverage limit remain the customer's responsibility.

Not sure if you're in a service area? Contact us before purchasing and we'll check your location.

What to Expect on Install Day

Getting a commercial espresso machine delivered is one thing. Getting it actually running — plumbed, programmed, and pulling properly — is another. Here's what happens when the technician comes out.

Before the appointment: Site preparation will be confirmed before technicians make it out. Once your machine ships, we'll coordinate scheduling with you and assign a local certified technician. Before they arrive, make sure your space is ready: the machine's permanent location should be determined, your water line and drain access should be in place, and your electrical supply should match the machine's requirements.

On the day The technician will handle the physical installation of the machine — positioning, water line connection, and drain setup. Once it's plumbed and powered, they'll run through the setup and basic programming: boiler pressure, shot parameters, and confirming that water flows correctly through the group heads and steam wands. Some basic training will be provided, they'll pull test shots to verify the machine is operating within spec.

After Installation

Once your machine is installed, we'll provide referrals for authorized service technicians in your area for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Coffeeionado offers lifetime support on all equipment we sell — we're here long after the install is done.

Governing Terms

This installation policy forms part of your agreement with Coffeeionado and is subject to our Terms of Sale and Terms of Service. In the event of any conflict, the Terms of Service governs.

Can I pick up the machine at your store?

We do not have a showroom or storefront for customer pickups, so orders cannot be picked up directly from us. That said, there is an exception for La Spaziale and La Pavoni products, you can contact us to arrange.

However, if you'd prefer, we can arrange to have your machine shipped to a local freight terminal/location for pickup instead. Let us know your city/state (or ZIP code), and we’d be happy to check the nearest terminal options for you.
