Powering Hundreds of Businesses Including:

You’ve been pulling shots long enough to recognize when a basic appliance is holding your technique back. This machine closes the gap between knowing how a proper extraction should taste and actually having the control to make it happen. Watching the front-mounted pressure gauge respond as you tweak your grind and dose replaces blind guesswork with the exact visual feedback your morning ritual has been missing. Grab a fresh roast and start pulling espresso that actually justifies the price of the bag.

Product Features

Dual‑Wall & Single‑Wall Filters

The Barista Express ships with both double‑wall (pressurized) and single‑wall filter baskets so beginners can get reliable shots while experienced users can practise true tamping and extraction. The magnetized tamper locks to the machine for hands‑free dosing but detaches when you want to manually tamp, and the hands‑free portafilter holder will auto‑dose the proper amount.

Built‑In Conical Burr Grinder

An integrated conical burr grinder with dosing controls grinds fresh for every cup so you can go from bean to portafilter in under 60 seconds. The removable 8 oz see‑through hopper and detachable burrs make switching beans and cleaning simple, and the Patented Razor™ dose‑trimming tool included keeps your dose consistent.

15‑Bar Pump & Thermocoil

A 15‑bar pump paired with a thermocoil heating system gives the pressure and temperature stability needed for espresso and microfoam. The machine reaches brew-ready temperature in about 60 seconds and produces steam in roughly 15 seconds, so your morning routine stays quick.

Dedicated Hot Water Spout

A dedicated hot water spout (new to this model) provides instant hot water for americanos, tea, or hot chocolate without tying up the steam wand. It keeps drink prep more efficient when you’re making multiple beverages.

On‑Board Pressure Gauge

The large, front‑mounted pressure gauge shows brew circuit pressure at a glance and works with the machine’s pre‑infusion feature to help you dial in extraction. It’s a simple visual cue that makes tweaking grind and dose more straightforward during practice.

Large Removable Reservoir & Water Filter

A 67 oz removable water reservoir reduces refill frequency for busy mornings, and the included carbon resin water filter helps lower water hardness to protect flavor and machine longevity. Easy access at the rear speeds refills and maintenance.

The Coffeeionado Take

Who's It For:

  • Home users upgrading from pod machines — The built-in grinder and PID temperature control give you a real espresso setup without buying components separately
  • Daily home espresso drinkers — The front-mounted pressure gauge and programmable shots provide enough feedback to dial in your morning routine without a steep learning curve
  • Enthusiasts exploring single-origin roasts — The grind-size dial and dose control let you experiment with lighter roasts, though you will want a capable standalone grinder eventually

It's Right For You If:

  • You pull 2–8 shots a day and want a compact all-in-one footprint on your counter.
  • You have a dedicated 120V outlet and counter space for a 12-inch-wide machine with clearance above for the bean hopper.
  • You are ready to learn puck prep but want the training wheels of a built-in grinder and pressure gauge while you figure it out.

Things to Consider:

  • The built-in conical burr grinder is functional but has its limits — once you start chasing lighter roasts or finer flavor separation, you will want a standalone 64mm-or-larger flat burr grinder to unlock the machine's full potential.
  • At 54mm, the portafilter is smaller than the commercial 58mm standard, which means most third-party baskets and accessories will not fit without adapters.

Our Take:

This is the machine that gets people into real espresso without the overwhelm of buying a separate grinder and learning everything at once. If you are upgrading from a pod machine or a basic drip setup and want to see what a proper shot tastes like, this is the right starting point — just know that the grinder inside it is a stepping stone, not a destination.

Water Quality & Machine Protection

Proper water quality is essential for optimal espresso extraction and long-term machine health. Use the guidelines below to ensure your machine performs at its best.

Parameter Ideal Range Why It Matters
Total Hardness 50-170 ppm Prevents scale buildup while maintaining flavor
pH Level 6.5-7.5 Ensures balanced extraction and protects internal components
Chlorine 0 ppm Eliminates off-flavors and prevents corrosion
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) 70-150 ppm Optimal mineral content for extraction and taste
Total Alkalinity ~7.0 Stabilizes acidity and extraction
Chloride 0-28 ppm Prevents corrosion (especially in steel boilers)

Important Note

Always refer to your machine's manual for specific water quality recommendations and maintenance schedules.

Advisory

Install a water filtration system to maintain consistent water quality and extend the life of your espresso machine.

What This Means

  • Water that’s too hard → scale buildup, reduced performance
  • Water that’s too soft → flat, dull espresso
  • Improper water can damage internal components over time

Machine-Specific Considerations

  • These guidelines are safe for most home espresso machines
  • Some machines (especially with stainless steel boilers) require stricter limits on chlorides

Product FAQ

Can I brew and steam at the same time?

No — this is a single-boiler machine, so you'll pull your shot first, then switch to steam mode. The transition takes a bit of time, which is normal for this type of machine.

Does it have PID temperature control?

Yes, the Barista Express includes PID control for stable brew temperatures. That's a nice feature at this price point.

How fast does it heat up?

About 1 minute thanks to the thermoblock heating system. You won't be waiting around in the morning.

What kind of grinder is built in?

It has a built-in conical burr grinder with stainless steel burrs, an 8 oz hopper, and stepped grind adjustment. It grinds on-demand with timed dosing.

What size portafilter does it use?

It uses a 54mm portafilter — Breville's proprietary size. Not the 58mm commercial standard, but there's a good selection of compatible Breville baskets.

Can it be plumbed into a water line?

No, it's reservoir-fed only with a 2.0L tank. It plugs into a standard NEMA 5-15 outlet.

Will it fit under kitchen cabinets?

At 15.8 inches tall, it fits under most standard cabinets. Just leave a little room above to access the hopper lid for refilling beans.

Is the grinder good enough for espresso, or do I need a separate one?

The built-in grinder works well for espresso and is a big part of the convenience factor. If you're just starting out, it'll do the job. Serious enthusiasts often eventually add a dedicated external grinder for more control.

How does free installation work?

We want to make your purchase as smooth as possible and will pay the installation via rebate on commercial espresso machines. This includes commercial machines with more than 1 group head and 220V.

If the certified installer needed is over 1.5 hours away then we will pay for the installation call (and install up to the value suggested on page minus call fee). Travel will be paid by customer. Inquire if you have any questions about your location.

Please note, any discounts subject to void the paid installation offer.

At Coffeeionado, professional installation is included with qualifying espresso machine purchases. Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible — from coordinating the technician to getting your machine up and running on day one.

Which Machines Qualify

Free professional installation is included with all espresso machines of 2 groups or more where indicated on the product listing. This policy applies to espresso machines only and does not cover other coffee equipment such as grinders, brewers, or accessories.

If you are unsure whether your machine qualifies, contact us before purchasing and we'll confirm.

What's Included

  • Travel and labor costs for installation within the technician's service area (up to 2 hours of travel)
  • Setup, basic programming, and commissioning of the equipment
  • Scheduling during regular business hours, Monday through Friday
  • Associated taxes and fees related to the installation itself

Installation must be completed within 30 days of delivery of the equipment. The installation benefit lapses after this window and cannot be reinstated.

How Installation Is Arranged

Depending on your purchase, installation is handled one of two ways:

Arranged directly — In many cases, Coffeeionado or the manufacturer will coordinate and pay the technician on your behalf. We will contact you after your order is processed to schedule the visit.

Reimbursement — In some cases, you may be asked to arrange the installation locally using an authorized technician and submit a rebate form for reimbursement. Once approved, the covered amount will be refunded to the original payment method used for your order.

We will confirm which arrangement applies to your purchase at the time of order confirmation. If you have questions before purchasing, contact us and we'll walk you through it.

What's Not Included

The following are outside the scope of the installation policy and remain the customer's responsibility:

  • Travel or callout costs beyond the first 2 hours of the technician's travel time — if your location falls outside the local service area, the overage is your responsibility
  • Water filtration systems and installation materials — including plumbing fittings, tubing, plugs, outlets, and any other ancillary components required to prepare the site
  • Electrical or plumbing work — site preparation must be completed before the technician arrives
  • Training on equipment operation — installation covers commissioning only, not barista or operational training
  • False start or callout fees if the technician arrives and the site is not ready for installation

Important: If a technician arrives and cannot complete the installation because the site is unprepared, you will be responsible for any callout or false start fee charged by the technician. However, your installation benefit remains intact — the visit will be rescheduled at no additional cost to your policy.

Water Filtration Requirement

Water filtration must be installed and operational before or at the time of installation. This is not optional — operating a commercial espresso machine without proper filtration will void the manufacturer's warranty. If filtration is not in place at the time of the technician's visit, installation may need to be rescheduled and the callout fee will be your responsibility.

If you need guidance on water filtration requirements for your machine, contact us before scheduling your installation.

Service Area

Installation coverage is tied to the manufacturer's authorized technician service area, generally within a 1.5-hour radius of the nearest certified technician. If your location falls outside this area, Coffeeionado will make reasonable efforts to arrange a local authorized technician, but travel costs beyond the 2-hour coverage limit remain your responsibility.

Not sure if you're in a service area? Contact us before purchasing and we'll check your location.

After Installation

Once your machine is installed, we'll provide referrals for authorized service technicians in your area for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Coffeeionado offers lifetime support on all equipment we sell — we're here long after the install is done.

Governing Terms

This installation policy forms part of your agreement with Coffeeionado and is subject to our Terms of Sale and Terms of Service. In the event of any conflict, the Terms of Service governs.

Can I pick up the machine at your store?

We do not have a showroom or storefront for customer pickups, so orders cannot be picked up directly from us. That said, there is an exception for La Spaziale and La Pavoni products, you can contact us to arrange.

However, if you'd prefer, we can arrange to have your machine shipped to a local freight terminal/location for pickup instead. Let us know your city/state (or ZIP code), and we’d be happy to check the nearest terminal options for you.
