Powering Hundreds of Businesses Including:

There comes a time when pump-driven consistency starts to feel like a limitation instead of a feature. The Esperto Competente is designed for the person who wants to be the variable, using the manual lever operation to dictate flow rather than just observing it. Mounting a pressure gauge directly to the group removes the guesswork, providing the specific data needed to manage the physics of your extraction in real time. It is a demanding machine that expects you to know what you are doing, which is exactly why you are looking at it.

Product Features

Manual Lever Operation

Manual Lever Operation gives you direct control over every phase of extraction so you can dial in shot rhythm and pressure like a trained barista. It’s perfect for hands-on dialing during your at-home ritual.

38 oz. Nickel-Plated Boiler

A 38 oz. Nickel-Plated Boiler lets you brew up to 16 cups without refilling—ideal for long morning sessions or entertaining. The Competente model pairs its brass boiler with a chrome base for a distinctive look and substantial capacity.

Competition Filter Set

Includes three precision-machined embossed competition filter baskets (9g, 16g, and 20g) and competition group screens so you can test doses and refine extraction across single to high-dose puck sizes. These components let you experiment without buying aftermarket parts.

Portafilter Versatility

Supplied with both bottomless and double portafilter handles to switch between visual shot feedback and traditional dual-spout extraction. Bottomless shots make it easy to spot channeling and improve your technique while dialing in.

Mounted Group Pressure Gauge

A mounted group pressure gauge lets you monitor brew pressure in real time, so you can correlate lever speed and puck prep with pressure readings. That instant feedback shortens the learning curve when trying new beans or recipes.

Dual Frothing Options

Choose between the mounted polished steam wand for hands-on milk texturing or the automatic cappuccino attachment when you want consistent milk with less fuss. Both options let you craft cappuccinos and lattes at home with barista-level control or convenience.

The Coffeeionado Take

Who's It For:

  • Precision-obsessed home baristas — The mounted group pressure gauge removes the guesswork, providing the specific data needed to manage the physics of your extraction in real time
  • Hobbyists who want manual control — The lever operation gives you direct, tactile pressure profiling that no pump-driven machine can replicate, and the 16-cup capacity means you can serve a small group
  • Enthusiasts upgrading from entry-level espresso — If you have mastered the basics on a pump machine and want to feel exactly what is happening inside the group head, this is the logical next step

It's Right For You If:

  • You pull 2–8 shots a day and want a machine that rewards technique rather than automating it away.
  • You are pairing this with a capable burr grinder and a scale — because without consistent dosing, the lever will amplify your inconsistencies, not hide them.
  • You want a 16-cup machine with a pressure gauge and counter space for a full-sized lever machine with a 120V outlet.

Things to Consider:

  • Lever machines demand a real learning curve — expect a week of mediocre shots before you start feeling the rhythm, and a few months before you are consistently pulling what you know the machine is capable of.
  • The machine requires significant recovery time and thermal management between shots — this is not the machine for rapid sequential service or entertaining a crowd.
  • The 51mm portafilter is non-standard, so most commercial accessories and precision baskets will not fit.

Our Take:

The Esperto Competente is the La Pavoni for people who want data-driven lever espresso — the group pressure gauge is the difference between guessing what the puck is doing and knowing, and that feedback loop is what turns a frustrating learning curve into a satisfying one. If you are the kind of person who tracks their extractions and wants a machine that rewards that discipline, this is the lever to commit to.

La Pavoni Esperto Abile

Temperature Strip

The temperature strip on the group head of the espresso machine is a crucial tool for ensuring that you are pulling shots at the ideal temperature. This strip provides a clear indication of the current temperature, allowing you to make necessary adjustments to achieve the perfect extraction.

Temperature Strip

Mounted Group Pressure Gauge

The mounted group pressure gauge for pressure profiling is a valuable tool that allows baristas to closely monitor and adjust the pressure during the brewing process. This gauge provides real-time feedback on the pressure exerted on the coffee grounds, enabling baristas to fine-tune their technique for optimal extraction. Overall, this tool empowers you to take control over every aspect of the brewing process, resulting in a more precise and high-quality espresso experience.

Manometer Mounted

This espresso machine includes a pressure gauge for monitoring boiler pressure, which varies from 0 to 2.5 bar. The manual advises maintaining the boiler pressure within the range of 0.6 to 1 bar, ensuring that the water temperature inside the boiler reaches around 94 degrees Celsius.

Style and Heritage

Easily pull shots with the fine crafted topped with an eagle espresso machine. Esperto line features a large 16 cup output, 38 oz. nickel plated boiler, a mounted boiler pressure gauge and two frothing systems (mounted polished steam wand & cappuccino automatic attachment).

Pavoni Competition Filters

Competition Filters

The perforation of the competition filters features consistently precise 0.30 mm holes that are evenly distributed. The surface is enhanced through electropolishing, removing iron oxide and creating a smoother, shinier material. This method not only enhances the overall appearance but also improves the perforation quality compared to standard methods. Each filter undergoes individual testing and is labeled with the La Pavoni mark.

Eagle on Top

Decorate your bar with this classic eagle top espresso machine, it easily fits over the boiler knob to add a touch of class.

Eagle on Top

Custom Wooden Handles

This espresso machine comes with custom rosewood handles on the lever and portafilter along with wooden accents on the steam knob and boiler cap.

Manual Espresso Maker

An espresso lever machine, or manual espresso maker, uses a hand-operated lever to brew espresso. In contrast to contemporary automated models, lever machines empower you to oversee the entire brewing procedure. The basic principle remains consistent: pressurize a small quantity of water through finely ground coffee beans to yield a potent and flavorful cup of espresso.

While there is a learning curve and regular maintenance required, the dual frothing cappuccino systems and large boiler capacity make it a great choice for entertaining or for use at home or in a small café. It has a small footprint so it can easily be set up on your kitchen counter.

Fine Italian Espresso Brand

Water Quality & Machine Protection

Proper water quality is essential for optimal espresso extraction and long-term machine health. Use the guidelines below to ensure your machine performs at its best.

Parameter Ideal Range Why It Matters
Total Hardness 50-170 ppm Prevents scale buildup while maintaining flavor
pH Level 6.5-7.5 Ensures balanced extraction and protects internal components
Chlorine 0 ppm Eliminates off-flavors and prevents corrosion
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) 70-150 ppm Optimal mineral content for extraction and taste
Total Alkalinity ~7.0 Stabilizes acidity and extraction
Chloride 0-28 ppm Prevents corrosion (especially in steel boilers)

Important Note

Always refer to your machine's manual for specific water quality recommendations and maintenance schedules.

Advisory

Install a water filtration system to maintain consistent water quality and extend the life of your espresso machine.

What This Means

  • Water that’s too hard → scale buildup, reduced performance
  • Water that’s too soft → flat, dull espresso
  • Improper water can damage internal components over time

Machine-Specific Considerations

  • These guidelines are safe for most home espresso machines
  • Some machines (especially with stainless steel boilers) require stricter limits on chlorides

Product FAQ

Does the La Pavoni Esperto Competente have a built‑in pump or is it a true manual lever machine?

The Esperto Competente is a true manual lever espresso machine and does not use a pump. Pressure for extraction is generated entirely by the lever and your own force, giving you direct control over the shot profile.

Is this the 110–120V US version, and can it be used on a standard household outlet?

Yes. The ESPCO-16 sold as the US version operates on 110–120V and is designed to work with a standard 15A household outlet. No special electrical wiring is required.

What is the boiler capacity and how many shots can it pull before needing to refill?

The Esperto Competente has approximately a 1.6 liter (about 54 oz) boiler. In typical home use, this is enough for roughly 16 single shots (or 8–10 double shots) before you need to turn the machine off, depressurize, and refill the boiler.

Does the Esperto Competente include any type of pre‑infusion feature?

While there is no automatic pre‑infusion system, you can perform manual pre‑infusion by raising the lever partway to gently introduce water into the puck before full pressure is applied. This is a common technique with manual lever machines like the Esperto.

Is the machine direct‑plumbable or does it only use the built‑in boiler reservoir?

The Esperto Competente is a boiler‑fed tank machine and is not designed for direct plumbing to a water line. Water is added directly to the boiler through the fill cap when the machine is turned off and fully depressurized.

What portafilters and baskets are included, and what size are they?

The US Esperto Competente typically comes with a 51mm portafilter and multiple precision filter baskets (single and double), along with a bottomless (naked) portafilter. Exact included accessories can vary by retailer, so check the listing for the current bundle.

Does it have a cool‑touch (no‑burn) steam wand or will the wand get hot during use?

The steam wand on the Esperto Competente is not a cool‑touch design and will become hot during use. You should use the included rubber grip or a cloth when adjusting the wand after steaming.

How long is the warm‑up time before it’s ready to pull shots and steam milk?

Warm‑up time is typically about 10–15 minutes for brewing temperature and closer to 15–20 minutes for stable steaming performance. Many users leave it on for around 20 minutes to ensure the group head and portafilter are fully heated.

How does free installation work?

We want to make your purchase as smooth as possible and will pay the installation via rebate on commercial espresso machines. This includes commercial machines with more than 1 group head and 220V.

If the certified installer needed is over 1.5 hours away then we will pay for the installation call (and install up to the value suggested on page minus call fee). Travel will be paid by customer. Inquire if you have any questions about your location.

Please note, any discounts subject to void the paid installation offer.

At Coffeeionado, professional installation is included with qualifying espresso machine purchases. Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible — from coordinating the technician to getting your machine up and running on day one.

Which Machines Qualify

Free professional installation is included with all espresso machines of 2 groups or more where indicated on the product listing. This policy applies to espresso machines only and does not cover other coffee equipment such as grinders, brewers, or accessories.

If you are unsure whether your machine qualifies, contact us before purchasing and we'll confirm.

What's Included

  • Travel and labor costs for installation within the technician's service area (up to 2 hours of travel)
  • Setup, basic programming, and commissioning of the equipment
  • Scheduling during regular business hours, Monday through Friday
  • Associated taxes and fees related to the installation itself

Installation must be completed within 30 days of delivery of the equipment. The installation benefit lapses after this window and cannot be reinstated.

How Installation Is Arranged

Depending on your purchase, installation is handled one of two ways:

Arranged directly — In many cases, Coffeeionado or the manufacturer will coordinate and pay the technician on your behalf. We will contact you after your order is processed to schedule the visit.

Reimbursement — In some cases, you may be asked to arrange the installation locally using an authorized technician and submit a rebate form for reimbursement. Once approved, the covered amount will be refunded to the original payment method used for your order.

We will confirm which arrangement applies to your purchase at the time of order confirmation. If you have questions before purchasing, contact us and we'll walk you through it.

What's Not Included

The following are outside the scope of the installation policy and remain the customer's responsibility:

  • Travel or callout costs beyond the first 2 hours of the technician's travel time — if your location falls outside the local service area, the overage is your responsibility
  • Water filtration systems and installation materials — including plumbing fittings, tubing, plugs, outlets, and any other ancillary components required to prepare the site
  • Electrical or plumbing work — site preparation must be completed before the technician arrives
  • Training on equipment operation — installation covers commissioning only, not barista or operational training
  • False start or callout fees if the technician arrives and the site is not ready for installation

Important: If a technician arrives and cannot complete the installation because the site is unprepared, you will be responsible for any callout or false start fee charged by the technician. However, your installation benefit remains intact — the visit will be rescheduled at no additional cost to your policy.

Water Filtration Requirement

Water filtration must be installed and operational before or at the time of installation. This is not optional — operating a commercial espresso machine without proper filtration will void the manufacturer's warranty. If filtration is not in place at the time of the technician's visit, installation may need to be rescheduled and the callout fee will be your responsibility.

If you need guidance on water filtration requirements for your machine, contact us before scheduling your installation.

Service Area

Installation coverage is tied to the manufacturer's authorized technician service area, generally within a 1.5-hour radius of the nearest certified technician. If your location falls outside this area, Coffeeionado will make reasonable efforts to arrange a local authorized technician, but travel costs beyond the 2-hour coverage limit remain your responsibility.

Not sure if you're in a service area? Contact us before purchasing and we'll check your location.

After Installation

Once your machine is installed, we'll provide referrals for authorized service technicians in your area for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Coffeeionado offers lifetime support on all equipment we sell — we're here long after the install is done.

Governing Terms

This installation policy forms part of your agreement with Coffeeionado and is subject to our Terms of Sale and Terms of Service. In the event of any conflict, the Terms of Service governs.

Can I pick up the machine at your store?

We do not have a showroom or storefront for customer pickups, so orders cannot be picked up directly from us. That said, there is an exception for La Spaziale and La Pavoni products, you can contact us to arrange.

However, if you'd prefer, we can arrange to have your machine shipped to a local freight terminal/location for pickup instead. Let us know your city/state (or ZIP code), and we’d be happy to check the nearest terminal options for you.
