# La Pavoni (US Version) Professional Copper & Brass Lever Espresso Machine, PB-16

## The Manual Lever: Precision Without Electricity

Every espresso shot demands skill. La Pavoni's manual lever system cuts through the unpredictability of automatic machines—you control pressure, timing, and extraction directly. For cafés that built their reputation on consistency and barista craftsmanship, this machine doesn't compromise. You get repeatable shots, lower operational noise, and zero dependency on electronic calibration drift. That matters when your customers taste the difference.

## How It Works: Direct Mechanical Control

The PB-16 uses a hand-operated spring-loaded piston to generate extraction pressure. Your barista applies force, feels the resistance, and adjusts mid-pull—a tactile feedback loop that catches problems before they reach the cup. The 16-cup capacity means you're pulling multiple shots without refilling the boiler. Copper and brass construction transfers heat efficiently and uniformly across the group head, minimizing temperature swings between shots. The result: espresso that tastes the same at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

This isn't theoretical. Manual lever machines have powered Italian espresso bars for over 80 years because the physics work. No solenoid valves to fail. No heating element calibration to drift. Just proven mechanical engineering.

## Workflow Math: What This Means for Your Bar

A skilled barista on a lever machine pulls 12–15 shots per hour with high consistency. Multiply that across a busy service: at 60 shots daily, you're looking at 4–5 hours of espresso duty. The manual system means your team stays engaged—they're not waiting for a machine to stop steaming or managing temperature surfing. Downtime drops because there are fewer electronic components to malfunction.

Setup time is minimal. Heat the boiler (typically 20–25 minutes on startup), and you're ready. No warm-up cycles. No recalibration.

## Built for a Century of Use

La Pavoni machines are hand-assembled in Italy using time-tested specifications. This isn't marketing—these machines regularly operate in busy cafés for 15, 20, even 30+ years with basic maintenance. The all-metal construction (copper boiler, brass fittings, cast iron frame) resists the corrosion and wear that plastics and electronics can't match. Replacement parts are standardized and available. Repairs don't require proprietary diagnostics or software access.

## Warranty & Support Through Coffeeionado

As an authorized La Pavoni dealer, Coffeeionado backs every machine with a **1-year manufacturer's warranty** covering parts and defects. We provide lifetime technical support—no expiration, no limitations. Our network of certified technicians across the U.S. ensures service isn't a matter of shipping your machine across the country. You get expert guidance during setup, operational training for your team, and responsive support when questions arise.

## The Decision

The PB-16 is for operators who value reliability, barista skill, and long-term ROI over convenience features. You're investing in a machine that won't become obsolete, won't bloat your maintenance budget, and will perform the same way in year five as it does in year one.

Copper and Brass Espresso Machine

Hand-made with the best materials, this is an iconic work of art. Copper tank with brass metal base and wood accents, 8 cup capacity, makes 1 or 2 cups at a time. It features an internal thermostat and reset fuse along with a steam wand and additional cappuccino automatic frother.

Wooden Handles

What sets this lever espresso machine apart is its attention to detail. Pull your shots in style with wooden accents on all handles.

Manual Espresso Maker

An espresso lever machine, or manual espresso maker, uses a hand-operated lever to brew espresso. In contrast to contemporary automated models, lever machines empower you to oversee the entire brewing procedure. The basic principle remains consistent: pressurize a small quantity of water through finely ground coffee beans to yield a potent and flavorful cup of espresso.

While there is a learning curve and regular maintenance required, the dual frothing cappuccino systems and large boiler capacity make it a great choice for entertaining or for use at home or in a small café. It has a small footprint so it can easily be set up on your kitchen counter.

Water Quality & Machine Protection

Proper water quality is essential for optimal espresso extraction and long-term machine health. Use the guidelines below to ensure your machine performs at its best.

Parameter Ideal Range Why It Matters
Total Hardness 50-170 ppm Prevents scale buildup while maintaining flavor
pH Level 6.5-7.5 Ensures balanced extraction and protects internal components
Chlorine 0 ppm Eliminates off-flavors and prevents corrosion
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) 70-150 ppm Optimal mineral content for extraction and taste
Total Alkalinity ~7.0 Stabilizes acidity and extraction
Chloride 0-28 ppm Prevents corrosion (especially in steel boilers)

Important Note

Always refer to your machine's manual for specific water quality recommendations and maintenance schedules.

Advisory

Install a water filtration system to maintain consistent water quality and extend the life of your espresso machine.

What This Means

  • Water that’s too hard → scale buildup, reduced performance
  • Water that’s too soft → flat, dull espresso
  • Improper water can damage internal components over time

Machine-Specific Considerations

  • These guidelines are safe for most home espresso machines
  • Some machines (especially with stainless steel boilers) require stricter limits on chlorides

Product FAQ

Does the La Pavoni Professional PB-16 use a pump, or is it a true manual lever machine?

The La Pavoni Professional PB-16 is a true manual lever machine and does not use a rotary or vibration pump. Pressure is generated entirely by the user pulling the lever, allowing full control over extraction.

Is there any kind of pre-infusion built into this machine?

Yes. While there is no electronic pre-infusion, the manual lever design naturally allows for pre-infusion. By lifting the lever partway and holding it briefly, you can soak the puck at low pressure before completing the pull, effectively creating a manual pre-infusion.

Can the PB-16 be directly plumbed into a water line, or is it tank-only?

The PB-16 is a tank-only machine and is not designed for direct plumbing. It uses an internal boiler that you manually fill with water. There are no factory fittings or kits from La Pavoni to convert it to direct plumb.

What type of boiler does this model have, and what is its capacity?

The La Pavoni Professional PB-16 has a single copper boiler with a capacity of approximately 38 oz (1.6 L). It serves both for brewing and steaming, and is heated by a built-in electric heating element with thermostat-based temperature control.

Does the copper and brass exterior require special maintenance to keep it from tarnishing?

Yes. Copper and brass are prone to tarnishing over time. To maintain the polished look, you’ll need to periodically clean the exterior with a non-abrasive metal polish safe for copper/brass and then wipe with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads, as they can scratch or dull the finish.

What kind of power does it require, and can it be used on a standard US household outlet?

The PB-16 US version is designed for standard US power: 120V, 50/60 Hz, with a typical power draw around 1000–1100 W. It can be used on a standard 15-amp household outlet without any special electrical setup.

Does this machine include a no-burn or cool-touch steam wand?

No. The steam wand on the La Pavoni Professional PB-16 is not a cool-touch or no-burn design. The metal wand becomes hot during use, so you should always handle it by the knob and use caution when cleaning or repositioning it.

What basket size and portafilter type does the PB-16 use, and are aftermarket baskets compatible?

The PB-16 uses a proprietary 51 mm portafilter with double and single baskets included. Many third-party 51 mm baskets, tampers, and some bottomless portafilters made for La Pavoni lever machines are compatible, but standard 58 mm commercial baskets and portafilters will not fit.

How does free installation work?

We want to make your purchase as smooth as possible and will pay the installation via rebate on commercial espresso machines. This includes commercial machines with more than 1 group head and 220V.

Please note, any discounts subject to void the paid installation offer.

At Coffeeionado, professional installation is included with qualifying espresso machine purchases. Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible — from coordinating the technician to getting your machine up and running on day one.

Which Machines Qualify

Free professional installation is included with all espresso machines of 2 groups or more where indicated on the product listing. This policy applies to espresso machines only and does not cover other coffee equipment such as grinders, brewers, or accessories.

If you are unsure whether your machine qualifies, contact us before purchasing and we'll confirm.

What's Included

  • Travel and labor costs for installation within the technician's service area (up to 2 hours of travel)
  • Setup, basic programming, and commissioning of the equipment
  • Scheduling during regular business hours, Monday through Friday
  • Associated taxes and fees related to the installation itself

Installation must be completed within 30 days of delivery of the equipment. The installation benefit lapses after this window and cannot be reinstated.

How Installation Is Arranged

Depending on your purchase, installation is handled one of two ways:

Arranged directly — In many cases, Coffeeionado or the manufacturer will coordinate and pay the technician on your behalf. We will contact you after your order is processed to schedule the visit.

Reimbursement — In some cases, you may be asked to arrange the installation locally using an authorized technician and submit a rebate form for reimbursement. Once approved, the covered amount will be refunded to the original payment method used for your order.

We will confirm which arrangement applies to your purchase at the time of order confirmation. If you have questions before purchasing, contact us and we'll walk you through it.

What's Not Included

The following are outside the scope of the installation policy and remain the customer's responsibility:

  • Travel or callout costs beyond the first 2 hours of the technician's travel time — if your location falls outside the local service area, the overage is your responsibility
  • Water filtration systems and installation materials — including plumbing fittings, tubing, plugs, outlets, and any other ancillary components required to prepare the site
  • Electrical or plumbing work — site preparation must be completed before the technician arrives
  • Training on equipment operation — installation covers commissioning only, not barista or operational training
  • False start or callout fees if the technician arrives and the site is not ready for installation

Important: If a technician arrives and cannot complete the installation because the site is unprepared, you will be responsible for any callout or false start fee charged by the technician. However, your installation benefit remains intact — the visit will be rescheduled at no additional cost to your policy.

Water Filtration Requirement

Water filtration must be installed and operational before or at the time of installation. This is not optional — operating a commercial espresso machine without proper filtration will void the manufacturer's warranty. If filtration is not in place at the time of the technician's visit, installation may need to be rescheduled and the callout fee will be your responsibility.

If you need guidance on water filtration requirements for your machine, contact us before scheduling your installation.

Service Area

Installation coverage is tied to the manufacturer's authorized technician service area, generally within a 1.5-hour radius of the nearest certified technician. If your location falls outside this area, Coffeeionado will make reasonable efforts to arrange a local authorized technician, but travel costs beyond the 2-hour coverage limit remain your responsibility.

Not sure if you're in a service area? Contact us before purchasing and we'll check your location.

After Installation

Once your machine is installed, we'll provide referrals for authorized service technicians in your area for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Coffeeionado offers lifetime support on all equipment we sell — we're here long after the install is done.

Governing Terms

This installation policy forms part of your agreement with Coffeeionado and is subject to our Terms of Sale and Terms of Service. In the event of any conflict, the Terms of Service governs.

Can I pick up the machine at your store?

We do not have a showroom or storefront for customer pickups, so orders cannot be picked up directly from us. That said, there is an exception for La Spaziale and La Pavoni products, you can contact us to arrange.

However, if you'd prefer, we can arrange to have your machine shipped to a local freight terminal/location for pickup instead. Let us know your city/state (or ZIP code), and we’d be happy to check the nearest terminal options for you.
