Powering Hundreds of Businesses Including:

You have likely reached the point where you are tired of letting a vibration pump decide how your espresso should taste. This machine is for the person who treats the morning ritual as a deliberate act of physics, requiring you to feel the resistance of the puck through the lever piston extraction. The nickel-plated brass boiler provides the thermal stability to move past the guesswork of entry-level setups and into the territory of genuine craft. It demands a level of attention that most people find tedious, but for you, that is the entire point of the exercise.

Product Features

Large Commercial Boiler

54 oz. boiler capacity supplies steady steam and brew volume so the EXP-16 can produce up to 16 espressos or cappuccinos before long recovery times. That capacity supports back-to-back steaming and brewing during busy service or extended home sessions.

Lever Piston Extraction

Piston operated lever group gives you direct, tactile control over pressure and shot timing for manual extraction. That hands-on control is ideal for dialing shots and adjusting pre-infusion to suit different beans.

Dual Frothing System

Dual frothing with a standard plated steam wand lets you steam milk for multiple drinks quickly while maintaining consistent texture. The plated wand adds durability for repeated steaming in a high-use environment.

Nickel-Plated Brass Boiler

Nickel plated, solid brass boilers provide substantial thermal mass and corrosion resistance. The brass core helps stabilize extraction temperature under load, improving shot consistency during continuous use.

Internal Thermostat & Reset

An internal thermostat controls pressure while an internal re-set switch protects the machine in case of overheating. Together they deliver repeatable pressure management plus a safety fallback for higher-volume operation.

Barista Kit Included

Comes standard with two stainless coffee baskets, a bottomless portafilter, double-spout filter holder, tamper and plastic press so you can start dialing in shots immediately. The bottomless portafilter also helps you visually troubleshoot extraction quality.

The Coffeeionado Take

Who's It For:

  • Hobbyists who want manual control — The lever operation gives you direct, tactile pressure profiling that no pump-driven machine can replicate, and the nickel-plated brass boiler provides the thermal stability to move past guesswork
  • Home users upgrading from entry-level espresso — If you have mastered the basics on a pump machine and want to feel exactly what is happening inside the group head, this is the next step
  • Enthusiasts who treat espresso as a craft — The manual lever demands your full attention every shot, which is either a dealbreaker or the entire reason you are buying it

It's Right For You If:

  • You pull 2–6 shots a day and want a machine that rewards technique rather than automating it away.
  • You are pairing this with a capable burr grinder and a scale — because without consistent dosing, the lever will amplify your inconsistencies, not hide them.
  • You have counter space for a full-sized 16-cup lever machine and patience for the 10–15 minute warm-up and thermal management between shots.

Things to Consider:

  • Lever machines demand a real learning curve — expect a week of mediocre shots before you start feeling the rhythm, and a few months before you are consistently pulling what you know the machine is capable of.
  • The 16-cup capacity is about boiler volume, not back-to-back service — the machine requires cooling periods after 3–4 consecutive extractions, so plan your entertaining workflow accordingly.
  • The 51mm portafilter is non-standard, so most commercial accessories and precision baskets will not fit.

Our Take:

The Professional Expo is the La Pavoni for people who want the full lever experience with enough boiler capacity to serve a few drinks without constant refilling — the nickel-plated brass boiler gives you the thermal stability to focus on the pull instead of fighting the machine. If you have the patience to learn and the space to house it, this is a machine that will outlast every appliance in your kitchen.

Gold Plated Espresso Machine

Manual Espresso Maker

An espresso lever machine, or manual espresso maker, uses a hand-operated lever to brew espresso. In contrast to contemporary automated models, lever machines empower you to oversee the entire brewing procedure. The basic principle remains consistent: pressurize a small quantity of water through finely ground coffee beans to yield a potent and flavorful cup of espresso.

While there is a learning curve and regular maintenance required, the dual frothing cappuccino systems and large boiler capacity make it a great choice for entertaining or for use at home or in a small café. It has a small footprint so it can easily be set up on your kitchen counter.

Custom Wood

This espresso machine comes with custom rosewood handles on the lever and portafilter along with wooden accents on the steam knob.

Water Quality & Machine Protection

Proper water quality is essential for optimal espresso extraction and long-term machine health. Use the guidelines below to ensure your machine performs at its best.

Parameter Ideal Range Why It Matters
Total Hardness 50-170 ppm Prevents scale buildup while maintaining flavor
pH Level 6.5-7.5 Ensures balanced extraction and protects internal components
Chlorine 0 ppm Eliminates off-flavors and prevents corrosion
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) 70-150 ppm Optimal mineral content for extraction and taste
Total Alkalinity ~7.0 Stabilizes acidity and extraction
Chloride 0-28 ppm Prevents corrosion (especially in steel boilers)

Important Note

Always refer to your machine's manual for specific water quality recommendations and maintenance schedules.

Advisory

Install a water filtration system to maintain consistent water quality and extend the life of your espresso machine.

What This Means

  • Water that’s too hard → scale buildup, reduced performance
  • Water that’s too soft → flat, dull espresso
  • Improper water can damage internal components over time

Machine-Specific Considerations

  • These guidelines are safe for most home espresso machines
  • Some machines (especially with stainless steel boilers) require stricter limits on chlorides

Product FAQ

Does the La Pavoni Professional Expo EXP-16 have a built‑in pump or is it fully manual?

The EXP-16 is a traditional lever espresso machine and does not use a pump. All brewing pressure is generated manually by pulling the lever, giving you full control over the extraction.

Is there any kind of pre-infusion function on this machine?

Yes. Because it is a lever machine, you can manually create a pre‑infusion phase by raising the lever partway and allowing water to gently saturate the coffee puck before applying full pressure. There is no automated pre‑infusion setting; it is completely user‑controlled.

Is the La Pavoni EXP-16 a direct‑plumbed machine or does it use a water tank?

The EXP-16 uses an internal water reservoir and is not designed to be direct‑plumbed to a water line. You fill the built‑in boiler/tank manually.

What is the boiler material and capacity, and how many shots can it pull in a row?

The Professional Expo typically features a brass boiler with a capacity of about 1.6 liters (US version). In practical terms, that’s enough for roughly 16 single espresso shots when starting from a full, properly heated boiler, though actual shot count depends on your workflow and use of steam.

Does this model come with a cool‑touch or no‑burn steam wand?

No. The steam wand on the EXP-16 is a traditional metal wand that becomes hot during use. You should handle it by the knob and use caution to avoid burns.

What kind of power requirements does the US version have, and can it be used on a standard household outlet?

The US version of the EXP-16 is designed for 120V, 60Hz operation and typically draws around 1000–1100 watts. It can be used on a standard 15‑amp household outlet without special wiring, as long as the circuit is not heavily loaded with other high‑draw appliances.

Does the machine include a pressure gauge, and what does it measure?

Yes. The Professional Expo usually includes a pressure gauge that measures boiler pressure (steam pressure), not direct brew pressure. It helps you know when the machine is up to operating temperature and when steam power is sufficient for frothing milk.

What size portafilter does it use, and are baskets and tamper included?

The EXP-16 uses a 51 mm portafilter (La Pavoni’s traditional lever size). It comes with at least one portafilter and single and double filter baskets. Many units also include a basic plastic tamper, though many users upgrade to a heavier 51 mm tamper for better consistency.

How does free installation work?

We want to make your purchase as smooth as possible and will pay the installation via rebate on commercial espresso machines. This includes commercial machines with more than 1 group head and 220V.

If the certified installer needed is over 1.5 hours away then we will pay for the installation call (and install up to the value suggested on page minus call fee). Travel will be paid by customer. Inquire if you have any questions about your location.

Please note, any discounts subject to void the paid installation offer.

At Coffeeionado, professional installation is included with qualifying espresso machine purchases. Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible — from coordinating the technician to getting your machine up and running on day one.

Which Machines Qualify

Free professional installation is included with all espresso machines of 2 groups or more where indicated on the product listing. This policy applies to espresso machines only and does not cover other coffee equipment such as grinders, brewers, or accessories.

If you are unsure whether your machine qualifies, contact us before purchasing and we'll confirm.

What's Included

  • Travel and labor costs for installation within the technician's service area (up to 2 hours of travel)
  • Setup, basic programming, and commissioning of the equipment
  • Scheduling during regular business hours, Monday through Friday
  • Associated taxes and fees related to the installation itself

Installation must be completed within 30 days of delivery of the equipment. The installation benefit lapses after this window and cannot be reinstated.

How Installation Is Arranged

Depending on your purchase, installation is handled one of two ways:

Arranged directly — In many cases, Coffeeionado or the manufacturer will coordinate and pay the technician on your behalf. We will contact you after your order is processed to schedule the visit.

Reimbursement — In some cases, you may be asked to arrange the installation locally using an authorized technician and submit a rebate form for reimbursement. Once approved, the covered amount will be refunded to the original payment method used for your order.

We will confirm which arrangement applies to your purchase at the time of order confirmation. If you have questions before purchasing, contact us and we'll walk you through it.

What's Not Included

The following are outside the scope of the installation policy and remain the customer's responsibility:

  • Travel or callout costs beyond the first 2 hours of the technician's travel time — if your location falls outside the local service area, the overage is your responsibility
  • Water filtration systems and installation materials — including plumbing fittings, tubing, plugs, outlets, and any other ancillary components required to prepare the site
  • Electrical or plumbing work — site preparation must be completed before the technician arrives
  • Training on equipment operation — installation covers commissioning only, not barista or operational training
  • False start or callout fees if the technician arrives and the site is not ready for installation

Important: If a technician arrives and cannot complete the installation because the site is unprepared, you will be responsible for any callout or false start fee charged by the technician. However, your installation benefit remains intact — the visit will be rescheduled at no additional cost to your policy.

Water Filtration Requirement

Water filtration must be installed and operational before or at the time of installation. This is not optional — operating a commercial espresso machine without proper filtration will void the manufacturer's warranty. If filtration is not in place at the time of the technician's visit, installation may need to be rescheduled and the callout fee will be your responsibility.

If you need guidance on water filtration requirements for your machine, contact us before scheduling your installation.

Service Area

Installation coverage is tied to the manufacturer's authorized technician service area, generally within a 1.5-hour radius of the nearest certified technician. If your location falls outside this area, Coffeeionado will make reasonable efforts to arrange a local authorized technician, but travel costs beyond the 2-hour coverage limit remain your responsibility.

Not sure if you're in a service area? Contact us before purchasing and we'll check your location.

After Installation

Once your machine is installed, we'll provide referrals for authorized service technicians in your area for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Coffeeionado offers lifetime support on all equipment we sell — we're here long after the install is done.

Governing Terms

This installation policy forms part of your agreement with Coffeeionado and is subject to our Terms of Sale and Terms of Service. In the event of any conflict, the Terms of Service governs.

Can I pick up the machine at your store?

We do not have a showroom or storefront for customer pickups, so orders cannot be picked up directly from us. That said, there is an exception for La Spaziale and La Pavoni products, you can contact us to arrange.

However, if you'd prefer, we can arrange to have your machine shipped to a local freight terminal/location for pickup instead. Let us know your city/state (or ZIP code), and we’d be happy to check the nearest terminal options for you.
